We asked our community of retreatants if they had any stories of how their mindfulness experience at Sharpham helped them.

Hannah responded by sharing inspiring testimony: her smartphone use had declined by 92% since she'd been on our Mindfulness for Beginners retreat, she'd connected much more with her children and nature and that she'd even managed to find making a bed mindful!

Hannah couldn't make mindfulness work for her

Hannah, a busy mum of three young children, had always been curious about mindfulness but despite her best efforts, couldn’t make it work for her.

“I know on paper that mindfulness is really good for you and I've done all the things that I guess so many people do, which is download Headspace, try to meditate here and there, but I’ve always ended up frustrated,” she said.

Everything changed when she went on a trip with her husband and his friends, who were passionate about mindfulness and meditation. After listening to their stories - one of overcoming addiction, the other of navigating personal struggles - she felt inspired, and when her husband suggested she try a mindfulness for beginners retreat, she decided to come to Sharpham.

Learning to be fully present

At the retreat, everything Hannah thought she knew was gently turned on its head.

The facilitators, Steve and Emma, didn’t focus on long hours of meditation. Instead, they introduced the idea of trying to be fully present in the simple tasks.

One of the first exercises was to make a bed - mindfully. Although it sounded simple, it was actually a revelation.

Said Hannah: “I was initially pretty skeptical,  but actually once I tried it, it made sense. It wasn’t about making the bed perfectly, it was about being fully present in the moment while I was making it. Lightbulb moment!”

Being mindful has "made a huge difference"

Since returning home, Hannah has been trying to incorporate mindfulness into her daily routine, particularly enjoying walks to school with her youngest, where they chat and observe nature together. She’s also made a huge effort to reduce her phone use, checking it less often and using it more intentionally.

She’s found these small changes have made a big difference to her family relationships: her connection with her children has deepened, her relationship with her husband has become more meaningful, and she feels more grounded.

She credits the Mindfulness for Beginners retreat at Sharpham for being a game-changer.

“I feel like I've literally woken up to the world I'm in and I have a mix of absolute astonishment and happiness that I've got this…It’s not about sitting in silence for hours or trying to clear your mind. It’s about being present in your everyday life, no matter what you’re doing.

"It’s made a huge difference to my life.”
