Extinct animals remembered with Life Cairn on Sharpham Estate

Extinct animals remembered with Life Cairn on Sharpham Estate

Published: 01 December 2018

Species made extinct through human activities have been honoured with a memorial erected on the Sharpham Estate.

On Saturday 1 December 2018, 'mourners' processed from Totnes to the Estate, carrying banners adorned with the names and pictures of animals who have disappeared from the Earth.

The participants stopped by the Green Oak Bench to surround a fire and then the Life Cairn - a pile of stones to mark the extinct creatures.

There they took part in a moving ceremony which included poetry written and read by Jackie Juno.
