Our next Dharma Pathway meditation retreat at The Barn retreat centre at The Sharpham Trust is on the subject of metta and is led by Lindsay Alderton

Lindsay Alderton returns to The Barn retreat centre this year to offer a retreat on metta, that's part of our series of connected retreats called The Dharma Pathway.

Here's what she says about the forthcoming Loving-Kindness retreat

What is Metta?

Metta, which is also known as loving kindness, friendliness or solidarity, is a practice of intentionally cultivating benevolence as the orientation of the heart and mind.

And it's also a path to wisdom.

Metta sits alongside the three companion qualities of joy, equanimity, and compassion that naturally exist in an awakened heart and mind, all of which are both attitudes to develop, but also anchors to hold us steady in these increasingly challenging times.

Metta is considered to be boundless in nature - you will never reach a point where you cannot cultivate more metta.

And over the days together we'll be exploring this capacity to expand the heart, offering love to ourselves, to our friends, our families, our allies, expanding out to those we may find more challenging or difficult, and to the world as a whole, this capacity to love the world.

What else happens on this meditation retreat?

We'll be doing this through meditation practices and through teachings, but also through creative arts practice and time on the land and nature-based practice.

And there'll also be space for silence, but there will also be time for community inquiry and dialogue.

Is this retreat open to beginners at meditation?

The retreat is suitable for anyone, so if you're brand new to practice or if you've been practising for a while, and you can find out more on the website or via the link below.

It's such a beautiful time of year up here at Sharpham and I'm really looking forward to welcoming you and sharing these days together.
