1-day Mindfulness Through the Arts

Develop mindful awareness and your own expression by making drawings, poems and sounds on this creative 1-day course.

Mindfulness courses at The Sharpham Trust

Using simple exercises and materials, you'll let go of your preconceptions about being artistic.

You'll see how mindfulness - the art of concentration, of being quiet, composed and paying attention - is also the art of being open, creative and responsive.

Chance, repetition and observation will be used as meditative processes, helping you to develop concentration, peace of mind - and enjoyment!

The workshop is designed both for those with no previous experience or expertise in the arts, and for artists and writers who want to develop the mindful aspects of their practice.

This workshop is for you if you:

  • Are interested in the practice of mindful meditation – whether as a beginner or as an experienced meditator
  • Would like to develop creativity, concentration, imagination and awareness in a supportive environment
  • Would like to explore the interconnections between mindfulness and the arts
  • Have never thought of yourself as an artist – but you're interested
  • Are an artist, writer or musician wishing to develop your practice in new directions through mindful awareness

Mindfulness courses at The Sharpham Trust

In this workshop, you'll:

  • explore contrasting approaches to drawing: gesture and mark-making; drawing from observation; and imaginative and expressive drawing. The emphasis will be on the process not the product
  • Use simple chants and repeated phrases to discover the relationship between breathing, vocal sound, concentration and calmness
  • Construct short poems from found materials with mindful observation
  • Investigate how to enhance your creativity through a non-judgmental approach to trying things out

Materials are provided. But if you have favourite drawing implements or sketchbooks and so on, feel free to bring them.

The course takes place in the South Wing Hall at Sharpham from 10am - 4pm.

Bring a packed lunch and wear loose comfortable clothing. Teas, coffee and hot water are provided.
