Volunteers as 'citizen scientists', monitoring and logging wildlife on the Sharpham Estate

To mark Volunteers Week, Sharpham Trust volunteer Hugh shares his story in the video below about how joining our Citizen Science volunteering group has aided his cancer recovery, taught him new things about nature - and made him realise he's becoming just like his mother...

When Hugh was recovering from a rare blood cancer (multiple myeloma), he happened upon Sharpham and found that our amazing setting and purpose and connection to be found in a group of like-minded people working on nature-restoration was valuable medicine.

Despite having some physical limitations, Hugh can still participate well in our Citizen Science volunteering group. He's learnt a lot about flora and fauna, plus he's found relief from anxiety by exploring the Great Outdoors.

We're sharing Hugh's story as part of Volunteers Week 2026
