Sunday 28 June, 10.30am
Explore the River Dart valley, its history and habitats in the company of Julian Carnell: Sharpham Trust director, river-campaigner, conservationist, educator - and now author.
Julian will lead guided walks along the river to mark the publication of his book Becoming the Ocean: A River Dart Journey Through the Wild, the Ancient and the Sacred.
You can buy a ticket for the walk, or a combined ticket that includes a copy of the book.
Books will also be on sale at the end of the walk, along with refreshments (or buy the book online here).
The route begins at Sharpham House, heads to the saltmarsh and along the river to Totnes, returning via our Wildflower Meadow, to Sharpham House.
Sturdy, suitable footwear is necessary.
The book combines travelogue, history, wildlife and memoir and along the route, Julian (also Chair of the Wild River Dart Partnership) will talk about his journey from the source of the river, high on Dartmoor, through woodland valleys, the farming lowlands and the estuary before reaching the sea at Dartmouth.
Becoming the Ocean tells the stories of the river’s history, wildlife and landscapes, describes the problems facing the Dart (and all England’s rivers) and explores the philosophical approach we have developed here at Sharpham in response.
Walk participants will also visit Sharpham's saltmarsh to learn more about this vital, riverside restoration project, and hear of the plans to restore the Dart.
There is parking available in the green bays on the right hand side as you drive towards Sharpham House - see here for more details on reaching us. We'll also meet at this point ahead of the event.
We're a 550-acre estate on the banks of the River Dart, set within a National Landscape Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
We've been designated organic and we're rewilding parts of the estate, helping to restore nature and to connect people to the land and themselves through our programme of retreats, courses and events.
