Mindfulness for Challenging Times: a free 7-week course for Torbay Council staff and Partner Organisations
Course overview
This course comprises 7 weekly, 45-minute sessions. Each experiential session will explore different themes to better understand and integrate mindfulness practice into your everyday life. The course will be led by Lynne Holmes one of our qualified and experienced Sharpham teachers.
This course is suitable for beginners, as well as those wishing to refresh and practice their mindfulness skills and will take place online using the platform Microsoft Teams.

Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally
The sessions will include some guided practice as well some theory and a chance for questions & answers.
Each week will be themed to help you to cultivate a mindfulness practice. The themes will include:
Wk 1 - Being Present/Awake
Wk 2 - Keeping the Body in Mind
Wk 3 - Breath - always with you
Wk 4 - Moving Mindfully
Wk 5 - Working with Difficulty and Challenges
WK 6 - Responding Skilfully
WK 7- Self-care in challenging times and going forward.
What will you experience and learn on this course?

- Understanding of our tendency to live much of life on autopilot and an introduction to how Mindfulness skills and techniques can help us become more fully present

- Lessons on how to apply mindfulness to your daily life

Level of commitment
To get the most out of this course we strongly recommend that you attend all the sessions if you can and sign up to the course as part of prioritising your self-care over these challenging times.
However, we know that many of you have busy work schedules so each session can also work on a standalone basis, giving you an opportunity to take a pause in a busy day.
Technical requirements
The course will take place using the online platform Teams. To use Teams you will need a computer or a phone with a speaker and camera. Instructions will be sent with your Welcome email when you book.
You can also download the Teams app here to familiarise yourself with it and make sure it meets your system requirements.
Mental health
Although mindfulness can be helpful in managing depression and anxiety, this course might not be appropriate for people who are currently experiencing an episode of clinically diagnosed anxiety, depression or other psychiatric illness.
The course is offered as an aid to everyday health, wellbeing and helping prevent relapse rather than as a ‘clinical intervention’.

About your teacher...
Lynne Holmes has a background as a nurse, health visitor and also trained as a psychotherapist at Metanoia in London in the early 1990s. While training as a therapist she became interested in meditation and has practiced for the last 15 +years. She has trained as a Mindfulness Teacher at Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre, Bangor University and Exeter University. She has taught MBSR groups for the Mood Disorders Centre at Exeter University and also mentors and supervises students taking the Mindfulness Diploma. She is passionate about teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction to people suffering from stress and brings a depth of experience and compassion to her work. She has a daily meditation practice, receives regular supervision and attends regular silent insight meditation retreats.
