The Entrance Hall

The Entrance Hall is truly spectacular with its famous dramatic elliptical cantilevered staircase and domed rooflight.

The staircase is a masterpiece of 18th century architecture. The staircase is keyed by the torsion of the curves, like an arch laid on its side. It is made of Portland stone, bought up the river from Dorset. The stone was given as a gift from the nation to Capt Philemon Pownoll, who commissioned the building of Sharpham house after having made his fortune in the Seven Years War.

Being one of the house's five rooms that are licensed for a marriage ceremony, it makes a particularly dramatic backdrop for wedding ceremonies. Up to 60 people can be accommodated in the stairwell and on the stairs.
