Artists in Residence
In September 2012, we launched the first in a series of Artist Residencies, which we aim to develop over the next three years. The focus for this first year is to work with an artist who specialises in participatory practice and whose work has synergy with the principles and values of the trust.
After a long, exhaustive and considered recruitment and selection process we finally chose Penny Skerrett as our Artist in Residence for 2012. Penny lived at the Boat House (next to Bathing House) for a period of six weeks from the 17th of September.
She is an artist whose practice has moved between the disciplines of fine art, performance, furniture making, activism and curating. She worked as a curator at the National Media Museum and most recently at the Southbank Centre in London. In 2007, she graduated from the Arts & Ecology MA at Dartington College of Arts and has since then continued to work in this field. She collaborates with former fellow student Eva Bakkeslett, who together initiated ‘The Agency of the Imagination’ and with Eleanor Wynn Davis and Bram Thomas Arnold, who together founded the ‘The Mobile Institute’.
Penny’s art practice is motivated by her desire to make poetic connections between ideas, people and places that uncover the interconnected nature of all living things. She draws upon ecopsychology and deep ecology to inform her practice and employs close attention, listening, observing and questioning when getting to know an environment.
She lives in Manchester where she is involved in various environmental projects including Abundance Manchester and the artist collective ‘Life Friendly Group’
She has been working at the Parrs Wood Environmental Centre as artist in residence for the past three years.
