A place to get active

In the words of our visitors

  • As my son is Autistic, I know that he can be very difficult especially in group situations. I am very used to picking him up from school or groups with the teacher or leader looking very serious and wanting "a chat" about him which usually leads somewhere difficult. It has been lovely to see you come round the corner with him and you both smiling and you bringing positivity with you about him. Thank you for seeing in him the boy I know he is. I just wanted to let you know as it has meant a lot to me and a lot to him.

Take A Moment!

Take A Moment!  is a way to express the feeling that someone gets when they are fully absorbed in any one of the Sharpham Outdoors Project activities. It might be the enjoyment a child gets learning through play on an Into the Woods Forest School activity. It might be the satisfaction that an international trainee on a placement gets as he/she grapples to understand the complex and interrelated demands of managing grassland for species diversity. It might just be the wonderful overwhelming feeling for the vastness of the universe that someone stargazing might feel.

Take A Moment! is also used to remind all of us of the value of taking a moment to stop and just ‘be in the moment’ such as seeing dappled woodland light playing on a moss covered stone, or hearing the rush of the cool autumn breeze through dry reeds or catching the momentary electric blue flash of a kingfisher wing.

This approach is of value to everyone and has been proven to significantly improve mental wellbeing, lift mood and boost self-esteem.

Through working with participants on the Spring to Life project, the Sharpham Outdoors Project has also seen how this approach can remove barriers and discrimination between those diagnosed with mental disorders and significant life challenges, and those who have not.

Throughout the website we hope you will find your own ways to Take A Moment!
