Into The Woods: Forest School
Forest School is a nationally recognised, innovative approach to outdoor play and learning.
Children of all ages have the chance to spend time in local woodlands – learning through forest school activities delivered over several weeks about the natural environment, how to handle risks and to use their own initiative, and co-operate with others. Into the Woods is our Forest School program drawing on the natural learning environment of Sharpham and the training of the highly skilled and qualified Sharpham Outdoors Project team.
Developed by our rangers Anna McNeill and Beth, Into the Woods uses the forest school approach to learning, with a strong emphasis on positive affirmation and setting students up to succeed while recognising the importance of learning by doing.
Currently, these are the Into the Woods activities running are;
- Forest School; Weekend 6 week forest school for 5-7 year olds and 8-12 year olds. Activities include wild food, fire lighting and bushcraft, making seasonal crafts and tool use, storytelling and nature discovery while learning about the landscape. The course will progress through 6 sessions with the final one including a treasure hunt and ceremony. Currently there are 3 6 week ‘terms’ through the year Spring, Summer and Autumn.
- Girls only wild club; aimed at supporting girls through challenging times to grow into strong, independent women through exploring nature, seasons and the elements using bushcraft, storytelling and wild art.
The Forest School approach, of child-led experiential learning, is ideally suited to families who are home educating their children. With this in mind, we have created a fortnightly session specifically for those families.
