Nature Walks & Talks

As part of our commitment to celebrate the rich and diverse built and natural heritage of Sharpham, the Sharpham Outdoors Project team are offering the chance to learn about the place via tailor made walks and talks.

If you are part of a group interested in history and the natural world then there is no where better to spend a day being shown around Sharpham by our experienced and knowledgeable host.

Join us for morning coffee in the grade 1 listed house or at South Quay while enjoying the views of the River Dart, taking a moment to contemplate the way the landscape has evolved from the ice age to the present day, with its use having changed from being the main transport artery for goods to Totnes to the tranquil scene we enjoy today.

Over the years, Sharpham has been home to a variety of local characters from the ‘mad hermit’ Willelmus in the 14th century, numerous wealthy merchants, politicians, and, due to the close links with Dartmouth and Plymouth a handful of naval heroes. The famous architect Robert Taylor was commissioned to design the house, while the great landscape architect Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown is thought to have landscaped the extensive grounds. Join us for a walk around the grounds to explore this special historic landscape.

Enjoy a light lunch from produce of the estate including Sharpham wine and cheese in the main dining room and explore the change in landscape via maps dating back to 1749 and artwork including works by Barbara Hepworth.

An example two mile History of the House and Landscape walk, beginning near the house would include:

  • The evolution of the landscape from the ice age to the present.
  • The role of Totnes in the history of the house.
  • The effects of the rural economy on the landscape.
  • The ‘Capability’ Brown landscape.
  • The orchards and woodland garden.
  • The history of the house and formal gardens.

The Sharpham Dynamic Map allows you to enjoy some of the rich heritage and natural history, arts and culture, wildlife and characters that make up this wonderful estate from the comfort of your own home
